Sustainability
The fundamental core of TOPSOIL's business is one sustainability. By recycling the soil that adheres to the sugar beet delivered to British Sugar's factories it ensures a valuable non-renewable resource is used in a sustainable way, contributing to UK and EU soil protection strategies.
British Sugar & the Environment
The British beet sugar industry aims to transform all of its inputs into sustainable products:
- The sugar beet fibre itself, after the sugar is extracted, is marketed for high-energy animal feed
- The final syrups from which no more sugar may be extracted, are used as a feedstock for our resin separation and bio-ethanol plant at Wissington, or is supplied as Molasses to the fermentation industry
- The lime products produced as part of the purification process are sold under the LimeX brand for soil conditioning
- Heat, water and CO2 from the Wissington factory is used to grow tomatoes at British Sugar's horticultural facility
