Sustainability
The fundamental core of LimeX's business is one of sustainability both in its manufacture and its usage. By recycling the limestone used in the processing of the sugar beet at British Sugar's factories it ensures a valuable resource is used in a sustainable way.
British Sugar & the Environment
The British beet sugar industry aims to transform all of its inputs into sustainable products:
- The sugar beet fibre, after the sugar is extracted, is marketed for high-energy animal feed
- The final syrups from which no more sugar may be extracted, are used as feedstock for our resin separation and bioethanol plant at Wissington, or is supplied as molasses to the fermentation industry
- The soil recovered from that adhering to the sugar beet is recycled and sold under the TOPSOIL brand
- Heat, water and CO2 from the Wissington factory is used to grow tomatoes at British Sugar's horticultural facility
